Tasting Note

The floral house style of Arton comes through on the nose here, showcasing a brandy studded with potpourri but surprisingly informed by ample barrel char, bordering on a dusty lumberyard character. The classic raisin, chocolate, and plum notes are more evident on the palate, but oak continues to cast a long shadow over the brandy. Well-spiced but never sweet, the brandy has a clear austerity that leads to a very dry finish, where notes of dark chocolate and incense linger fitfully.

Château d’Arton

Chateau d’Arton is one of the last few producers of Haut Armagnac. Haut or high, meaning higher ground, is the area where the Armagnac producers were mostly congregated pre-phylloxera, the devastation caused by pest infestation that wiped off the large scale of vines during 1863-1889. Today the producers of Haut Armagnac constituted only 3% of all three terriors producers. Victoire de Montesquiou and Patrick de Montal were among those few determined to bring back the glory of Haut Armagnac. And they did it from the ground up when they acquired Chateau d’Arton in 1981. The estate itself can be traced back to the Roman time as an ancient Roman coin bearing a portrait of Emperor Antonin the pious was found on the ground. There was a pre-historic cave that is now used to store oak casks for Aging. About 70 hectares of rolling hills are all alive with vineyards and fruit orchards. Chateau d’Arton products are only from its own estate. The Armagnac and wines are made from the vines cultivated and harvested on their ground and the production volume is quite limited. Their yield is only around 20 Gascon casks of Armagnac annually.
